Red, White and Blue Prayers
for
The Healing of Our Political Divides
These prayers constitute a meeting for worship for a healing of our body politic. We are meeting for worship, rather than for a political discussion per se.
The focus of our worship is thanksgiving for the historical miracle by which humanity has become gradually more democratic over the millenia, petition for a healing of the various divides that threaten the health of our nation and the world, and intercession for those who suffer in connection with any aspect of these issues.
The point is not to persuade each other, but to understand and appreciate people who look at matters of public policy from a viewpoint which we have trouble appreciating. We don’t usually end up agreeing. But we find each other more important than their or our political viewpoint.
Prayers and devotional readings should be prayers and devotional readings, rather than hidden political speeches. This is a tricky issue, but one guideline might be: If it changes the speaker, it is prayer.
