What is the DERBY DUCK RACE?

At St. Thomas Church, we love to raise
money for needy charities, especially when we get to host fun community events
at our church. In the past, you have bought lobsters or barbecue or something at
the annual Lobsterfest fundraiser. We want to invite you to an event we will be
hosting on the first weekend of May.
The Ducky Derby Race
will be a fun event for the entire family. We invite people to sponsor rubber
ducks as they race along Aldridge Creek from the boundary of our property with
our Lutheran neighbors to the foot bridge downstream.
The winner will take home the
prestigious Grand Duck Trophy, but the real fun will be watching hundreds of
little yellow duckies make their way down the creek. In the past, the proceeds
were split
between First Stop, a multi-denominational ministry to the homeless here in
town, and scholarships for campers coming to the
Special Session (for people
with mental and physical disabilities) at Camp McDowell.
In addition to race festivities, there
will be goodies to eat as well as other fun events such as a Duckwood Derby race
for the kids. Our race is the same day as the Kentucky Derby, so the ladies are
invited to wear their best Derby hats, for which prizes will be awarded. We’ll
wrap up the day by going inside and watching the Kentucky Derby while enjoying a
BBQ sandwich.
We look forward to seeing you at Ducky Derby
Day!
