Derby Duck Race

At St. Thomas, we love to raise money for charities, especially when we get to host fun community events at our church. Lobsterfest is our very successful fall festival and fundraiser, and the Derby Duck Race has emerged as our spring event!

We invite people to sponsor little yellow rubber ducks as they race down Aldridge Creek. You can sponsor one duck for $5, or a flock of six for $25—what a deal! The race starts at the northern boundary of our property adjacent to the Lutheran Church, and ends at the footbridge a few hundred yards downstream. Depending on the spring rains, the course can be rough and fast or slow and meandering. Some ducks have minds of their own and take detours, some are so anxious to race that they jump the gate, and some go tailfeathers up, but we guarantee it will be great fun to watch and to cheer your favorite duck on to victory!

The winner takes home the coveted Grand Duck Trophy, but the real winners are the charities. In previous years past we have raised money for First Stop, our community’s program to help the homeless, and Special Session at Camp McDowell. EVERY PENNY THAT WE RAISE GOES TO THE DESIGNATED CHARITIES.

The Derby Duck Race happens on the same day as the Kentucky Derby; ladies are invited to wear their best Derby hats. We have barbecue and Derby pie to eat, there are special games for the kids, and it’s a grand time for the whole family.  Join us at the Derby Duck Race the first Saturday in May!
