Children and Youth Education

3's and 4's class

Led by Karen Allison, Regina Carter, and Claudia Slagle, this class uses a specially designed nursery school program from Living the Good News, called, "Let the Children Come."  The children hear stories of Jesus and the Old Testament using colorful story-telling figures and stages designed for this age group. They then explore the story with simple activities and crafts. We plan to supplement this curriculum with Godly Play stories, when possible. They meet in Hiers Hall.

K & 1st and 2nd Grades

These classes use the Godly Play curriculum to explore church traditions, the sacraments, and the Sacred Stories using manipulatives, as well as art and imaginative play. The program was developed by Jerome Berryman using Montessori tradition. Each time they meet, the children hear the story, have an opportunity to respond to it and end with a feast! We are excited this year to be able to also use our new enrichment stories, as well as our basic collection of "Sacred Stories." The Kindergarten and 1st grade class is led by Julie and Richard Williams, Rena Anderson, and Faye Walker.  2nd grade is led by Carol Richardson and Holly Womack. The classes meet in Hiers Hall.

3rd & 4th and 5th & 6th   Grades

These classes will be using the Primary and Intermediate Episcopal Children's Curriculum, respectively. The curriculum contains three years of material: Shell Year (in which Baptism is studied); Chalice Year (in which the Eucharist is studied) and Cross Year (in which Worship is studied).  The format allows us to alternate study material over a 3-year cycle. This year we will be using the Chalice Year. Four units are included in every year of the curriculum: Old Testament, New Testament, Sacraments, and the Church. Every year also has material on the major events of the Church Year, including All Saints Day and Pentecost. They will also supplement where possible with Godly Play stories. The 3rd and 4th grade class is led by Marcia Steiner and Betsy Hill.  The 5th and 6th grade class is led by Michelle Box and Carol Covell.  These classes meet in Hudson Hall.

7th and 8th Grade

This class is using the Episcopal Children's Curriculum - Youth Program which challenges young people to test their values in the context of their Christian faith. It is designed to equip them to make smart choices about tough issues. The Middle School and Junior High segment presents Biblical characters as real people who dealt with issues of good and evil, happiness, truth and ultimate meaning. Like the younger children's curriculum the Youth Program has three years of material: Call, Covenant and Community.  Each year contains four units: Old Testament, New Testament, Contemporary Times and Basics.  This year we arel using the Call material but are excited to be adding some of the Community portions as enrichment.  This class meets in the YP (Young People) Room in Hudson Hall and is led by Kelly Evans.

High School (grades 9-12)

This class is led by Polly Robb and John Conover and meets in the EYC (Episcopal Young Churchmen). The youth will learn how the discoveries and rationale of Galileo, St Augustine, Darwin and Thomas Aquinas have actually been partners in an age-old adventure. "Science and Religion" is our topic this semester. We'll watch videos from the Great Courses Series and discuss our findings-- come join us in the EYC room in Hudson Hall!
